BERR was formed in June 2007 and has taken over all of the former responsibilities of the Department of Trade and Industry including sponsorship of Innovation & Research Focus

BERR's aim is to increase the UKs competitiveness and scientific excellence in order to generate higher levels of sustainable growth and productivity in a modern economy. The DTIs Construction Sector Unit (CSU) leads for Government on construction issues, in liaison with colleagues across Whitehall, to make a stronger case for the industry, at home, in Europe and internationally. Through its successful research and innovation programme, it supports R&I as a vital key to realise maximum value for construction clients, end users and stakeholders, and in exceeding expectations through the consistent delivery of world-class products and services.
