Eurocode Design manuals for building structures

The Institution of Structural Engineers has taken a proactive role in the preparation for the introduction of Eurocodes for structural design. In 2004 it prepared a report to the then Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, National Strategy for the Implementation of the Structural Eurocodes: Design Guidance and has established an industry-wide committee to monitor progress and advise on strategy. It has helped set up the Eurocodes Expert website and also established a study group on the teaching of Eurocodes in Universities.

To provide more detailed guidance, the Institution decided to update its design manuals to comply with the Eurocodes. These Manuals, for the design of simple building structures to British Standards, had been produced for structures using concrete, steel and masonry. It was decided to expand the range to reflect the suite of Eurocodes. In terms of materials, timber and simple steel and concrete composite construction have been included, and guidance is planned for more common areas with Manuals on the basis of design, geotechnics and seismic design. The latter is an Anglo-French production with the Association Française du Génie Parasismique.

The material-based Manuals are not just condensed versions of the codes but guides for structural design including information on various phases of the design process from scheme to final details. As such they should be useful for students as well as engineers looking to use the new codes.

A list of the Manuals and publication dates is shown in the table below. The programme for the Manual for geotechnics has not been established but the rest will be available well in advance of the March 2010 date for withdrawal of British Standards. Various bodies have supported the publication of the manuals and these are also shown in the table.
